Laser Show for Winter Events
In the presence of His Majesty the King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden and 4,000 spectators, the laser performance "The Saga of Skade" marked the much-acclaimed highlight at the opening ceremony of the 2002 Swedish Ski Championships in Vassara Square, Gällivare, March 20.
The story, about how giant daughter Skade invented the ski, was projected on a 30 by 10 meter screen, hung on the wall of a school, framed by an ice and snow set design with six meter icicles, illuminated ice blocks and ice sculptures – creating the illusion of an arctic fairytale cave.
The animated laser play was reinforced by effect lasers, light, and pyrotechnics which in the finale culminated in a firework display.
"A brilliant laser performance. Fun!" the Swedish King said afterwards. County governor Kari Marklund agreed: "A fantastic performance, and what a fun story!"
"The best thing that has happened to Gällivare in a long time", another spectator said, and the local paper headlines told about an opening ceremony of Olympic quality.
On this web site dedicated to the concept, you can read more on the project and how it can be adapted to other winter environments and events worldwide.
